Joshua has been very busy cleaning and digging. The crates are covering the budding rhubarb that the chickens think are great to peck at. We got our first shipment of fruit stock in and already have them potted up until the soil gets warmer. </div>

The coop is back in use. This group of ladies are quite interesting.<br />
They still prefer to roost any place except the roost we built for them.<br />
They don't like the upper level of the nest boxes prefering<br />
to build their own on the floor or underneath the boxes. </div>

<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oLTPQW7uOyk/WtqVm9jxpzI/AAAAAAAAEGg/-pcgebKc9DwQG8WzeDeTf0eA-B_r3fovgCLcBGAs/s1600/isbl_1680x420.26745735_711rlerp.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="1600" height="160" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oLTPQW7uOyk/WtqVm9jxpzI/AAAAAAAAEGg/-pcgebKc9DwQG8WzeDeTf0eA-B_r3fovgCLcBGAs/s640/isbl_1680x420.26745735_711rlerp.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I came from a family of collectors nothing too fancy, just stuff. But then I married into a family of real die hard pickers and collectors. Going from auctions in the 70's to cleaning out houses in the 80's and 90's we amassed a lot of really neat things. Many of my items are our families household objects that have been used and loved for several generations. Added to that are the miscellaneous finds we picked up along the way to add to our already growing collections. </div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: center;">
Now in this collection of spice tins I found some very unique ones. One in particular was </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9ZkHRaAoMQU/WtqWE455hNI/AAAAAAAAEGo/96Ork7q_WlIcvZrhwfYNwT-N3S9HNumoQCLcBGAs/s1600/fullsizeoutput_35f0.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1198" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-9ZkHRaAoMQU/WtqWE455hNI/AAAAAAAAEGo/96Ork7q_WlIcvZrhwfYNwT-N3S9HNumoQCLcBGAs/s320/fullsizeoutput_35f0.jpeg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: center;">
While the tin itself doesn't provide much in the way of history, the story of the business that produced this does. </div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Utica has such a rich history for such a small city. One person who made a big impact there was William Blaikie (1822-1910)(http://www.oneidacountyfreedomtrail.com/who-s-who.html)</div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
William Blaikie played an important part in the Underground Railroad as a link in the network of black and white “stations” that covered the county’s Underground Railroad. Blaikie’s Apothecary was on Genesee Street where the Radisson Hotel now sits. He sheltered freedom-seekers at his home at 2203 Genesee, (now St. Elizabeth's parking lot)sometimes in the barn of his pro-slavery neighbor. His family sometimes fled their home because of the threat of anti-abolitionist violence. They were often reviled by their neighbors, and many faced violence. Moreover, they risked serious legal penalties if they were caught.</div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
Blaikie was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1822. He is buried in Utica’s Forest Hill Cemetery (Plot 30).</div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">

<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I spent quite a while looking for an old photo of this business located at 202 Genesee Street. I was pretty sure this was the place as Hurlburt's was 188 Genesee Street. Then I remembered a photo on the Utica College web site on a entry about the underground railway and there is was, the name I couldn't see on this photo. </div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal; min-height: 15px;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; font-size: 12px; font-stretch: normal; line-height: normal;">
I don't know what it is about my passion for mixing bowls but I imagine it is the image my memory holds of my mom making her wonderful pies and cookies back in our 50's house kitchen. Or maybe the Saturday's we ate at gramma's house during our dinner break as they called lunch back then, in between the farm and green house chores. She always had the cookie jar full and something special for dessert. </div>

Unfortunately for me, the horse had to go before I came along in 1952. Black Pete was a beautiful black Morgan and was my father's pride and joy. After my parents married in 1946 and built a house in North Utica, Pete had a home in the back yard in a barn also built by my dad. But eventually, zoning came into effect and horses weren't on the "allowed" list. <br />

It's been 7 years since my first Thanksgiving in Kentucky. This time I took a LONG week and have enjoyed beautiful weather and a much needed rest. We had some great adventures as well. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Our letter boxing journey took us to Indiana and a delightful candy store that makes their own candy AND they even had a smashed penny machine. </div>

Wednesday night we journeyed to the Mega Caverns just south of the zoo. This place was AMAZING. Underground Christmas light show that started with Keep Christ in Christmas and ended with a beautiful nativity scene. There were themes throughout and music as well. Lasting a half hour it was well worth the $25.00. Tyler agrees. </div>

It's been with Tyler in my mind. BUT it is hard to knit a vest with out the wearer present, esp. one who is tall and lean.<br />

It is a battle cry and it needs to be heard through out not just the USA but the world. I have always loved reading about the revolutionary war years. Perhaps that rebellion within me accounts for my understanding of why my ancestors did what they did. And I've always believed that one day we, believers, will need to take the same stand that they did. They fought for what they believed in. <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
My husband has been talking a lot lately about the great awakenings and this appeal to heaven. I think he is on to something. Nothing original but God is making it real to us. </div>
<div>

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It really all started back before we were even a nation. Back to a time when my ancestors and Doug's too came here to settle. Germans and Englishmen. What drove them? - The Klocks were driven from Germany after severe freezing weather killed many trees making it hard to survive</div>

After driving over back roads where I wished I could live we came to a small bridge spanning a wonderful flow of water falls. With all the rain we've been having lately, the water was running swiftly. Tyler, who had been wanting to swim all day, took his shoes off and waded until he slipped on the algae covered rocks. It was such a beautiful spot and we'd like to come back and plant a letterbox some time soon. And of course explored some more.<br />

And in the center of the development was barn (now a playground) where my great great grandparents James Irving and Lucinda Klock Roberts lived. Of course, as a child I had no interest in genealogy or history, so this little bit of my ancestry was overlooked. Oh how I wish I had explored and taken photos of the area. Interesting tidbit while looking at old maps. Buchanan Road was named for the family that lived there in the late 1800's<br />

Weaver, Captain Mark Damuth, and Christian Reall and their families settled into an area now known as Deerfield Corners. </a>In 1776, these same families, with the forewarning of a friendly Native American "Blue Back," escaped a pending attack by the Brittish on their settlement. Their escape brought them to Little Stone Arabia, a small fort located in the present day Town of Schuyler. Subsequently, Captain Damuth lived in Herkimer over the next few years. George J. Weaver was taken prisoner near Herkimer by the Brittish and Indians and was removed to Canada and then England. He was later released and returned to the area.</div>

In 1784, all three settlers and their families moved back to the area of their original settlement. Christian Reall built a log cabin on the bank of what is now know as Reall's Creek. Soon after the original settlers returned, they were followed by Peter, Nicholas, and Geoge Weaver, distant relatives of the original Weaver family. George Damoth and the Harter families also settled in the area.</div>

It boundaries were from the West Canada Creek in the north to the Mohawk River in the south (present day location of the railroad tracks north of Union Station), the Town of Schuyler and Herkimer County were to the east, and the area near the current State Route 12 to the west. The land within the town consisted of two primary tracts of land known as "Gage's Patent" and "Cosby's Manor." The former, consisting of about 18,000 acres of land, was granted by King George III of England to General Thomas Gage. <b>The latter was 22,000 acres of land aquired by Governor William Cosby. </b>The first town meeting was held at the home of Ezra Payne.</div>

The hamlet of Mechanicsville (Brown's Gulf) was a thriving community on the edge of the Deerfield ravine in the first half of the 19th century, but later diminished due to the growth of a new city called "Utica." The area later served as a Boy Scout camp. North Gage was a bustling community on the northern edge of town, and Deerfield Corners remained a center for commerce. The Town of Deerfield also was home to many churches including the North Gage Presbyterian Church (North Gage), Church of the Holy Cross (Bell Hill Road), St. Peter's Church (Deerfield Corners), Deerfield Baptist Church (First Baptist Church, Herkimer Road) and many others. Deerfield once hosted two Post Offices located at North Gage and Deerfield Corners.</div>

The first, known as Cosby's Manor, amounted to 43,000 acres of land acquired by New York Governor William Cosby. The second grant occurred in 1769 when King George awarded 18,000 acres to General Thomas Gage, His Majesty's Commander of troops in North America. But wanting more in the way of nutrition I got the bright idea of adding "weeds" to them. I've know about the benefits of "weeds" since I was a child. But the idea of digging dandelions, as mom put it, is too much work for such a small output. Dandelions are great for our health. Besides being rich in Calcium and anti-oxidants they are packed with all kinds of nutrients that might benefit liver issues, diabetes, cancers, gall bladder problems.<br />

To that little handful I added some fresh blueberries, black grapes, pineapple, apple juice, and frozen strawberries. <br />

Tee Shirt Yarn - it's all the rage and fits right in with my desire to use what I have. I even found that old cotton sport socks make great family cloth when cut in half. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://francineclouden.typepad.com/callaloo_soup/2013/05/tuesday-to-do-how-to-make-t-shirt-yarn-in-10-minutes-or-less.html" target="_blank">Callaloo Soup</a> has a great tutorial on how to cut up a tee shirt to make a single ply of yarn. Because I decided to try my new yarn on my twining loom I found that I didn't want any seams so I adjusted this method a bit. When twining I use an invisible join so it lays flat. <br />
<br />
My strips were cut about 1 1/4" wide but I think the next time I will try a wider cut.<br />
<br />
Calllaloo Soup used scissors but I found my rotary cutter much more practical and easier on my thumb. <br />
when using tee shirt material make sure the warp is pulled tight.The Benson Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07153225593636878838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189387959251235667.post-46039144452726779142014-11-25T15:28:00.002-08:002014-11-25T15:28:30.561-08:00Reasons to live in the Mohawk ValleyMy daughter and grandson came to visit for Thanksgiving and one of the things we do I talk about how wonderful it is to living where I do. Besides the fact that we (meaning our farm) rarely get bad weather, and that I have lived here 60+ years, I believe that the Utica Rome area is on the edge of a boom. But besides that there are many reasons why my daughter and her family would benefit from living here.<br />
In random order as they popped into our heads.<br />
<br />
1. On call baby sitters - what a money saver.<br />
2. You can grow vegetables year round in our greenhouse (like that Alaska show)<br />
3. Biking, canoeing and kayaking are close by (not to mention the Adirondacks)<br />

Been working new sweater patterns - soaker pants, a shawl collared sweater and a one piece side to side that really got me doing a lot of ripping out and knitting. Of course, I will try it again but maybe in a solid color this time.<br />

It is funny in the craft show world. You can carry a product for a year with only selling </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
one or two and then you hit that one special show and you sell a dozen in an afternoon. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Clinton Show was one of those shows. Sold out of my "body buddies" so had to get</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
to work making more. Over the years there have been so many people making these</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
but I think have come upon the perfect blend of fabric, sewing and filling. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GnIVmumP0Mo/UoLzcTc1SAI/AAAAAAAAC_8/DwalUo32ZZg/s1600/DSC00813.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-GnIVmumP0Mo/UoLzcTc1SAI/AAAAAAAAC_8/DwalUo32ZZg/s320/DSC00813.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I use flannel because of it's coziness.<br />
I sew three chambers in them because it lies better around your neck.<br />
I only use flax seeds because they have better heating properties but mostly because I love the way they smell when warmed AND they don't get a nasty food smell if over heated.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ml8TrLv1zLo/UoLzcn-KiDI/AAAAAAAADAE/3TANJnzHCEs/s1600/DSC00818.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ml8TrLv1zLo/UoLzcn-KiDI/AAAAAAAADAE/3TANJnzHCEs/s320/DSC00818.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Tonight - I cut out 2 dozen buddies and started the sewing while catching up on some Hart of Dixie and Parenthood. That used up my stash of flannel. Gee, how sad cause now I'll have to go buy some more, said a sewer never. <br />
<br />

Crockpot Steel Cut Oats - or how I get to work on time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love hot cooked cereal for breakfast. Hey I love cereal, period, any time of the day. But I don't like making breakfast in the morning, even a cup of coffee is a chore. So, we (the master cook) and I came up with this way of making sure I have my cereal. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hnGXiTcedXI/UlHyWA9OdHI/AAAAAAAAC-Q/Lcl5VfvnE1s/s1600/DSC00633.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-hnGXiTcedXI/UlHyWA9OdHI/AAAAAAAAC-Q/Lcl5VfvnE1s/s320/DSC00633.JPG" width="267" /></a></div>
<br />
Assemble ingredients --<br />
Bob's Steel Cut Oats<br />
Raisins<br />
Walnuts, chopped<br />
Cinnamon<br />
Salt<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Get the containers from the cereal drawer<br />
the measuring cups and spoons<br />
large bowls<br />
<br />
Yes, those are recycled iced teas containers - they sure come in handy.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

1 T. chopped walnuts<br />
2 T. raisins<br />

<br />
Pour 1 cup of oats into container.<br />
Cap it and viola - ready to be made into<br />
hot cereal.<br />
<br />
At night, add 3 cups of water to crock pot, one container of oats, stir well, set to WARM and that's it. <br />

Here they are all filled and ready to go. Enough to last almost 2 months. One container makes 4 servings. <br />
All four of my children were home schooled to various degrees and all four went to college. Two have bachelors, while the other two are working on associates. I so think it would be nice to retire early and school my grandchild but I know that isn't an option. In a country were two parents sometimes have to work due to circumstances, homeschooling becomes difficult. Yet the facts are in and show that most home educated children are far ahead of their public schooled peers.<br />
<br />
All of my children have a respect for adults, knew the importance of communication and all have good work ethics. Because they were schooled at home - probably not BUT I do know they are better people than if I would have sent them to our local central school. They know how to think critically, aren't followers, and my list can go on and on. <br />
<br />
As a believer in Christ and what the Bible says, I don't buy into the notion that our children should be educated by the government (in my eyes Egypt) but by their parents and family. The Benson Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07153225593636878838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189387959251235667.post-72097917893662785772013-08-14T12:04:00.000-07:002013-08-14T12:04:29.050-07:00Joyce Meyer - part 2<br />
Something I seem to always struggle with is giving out. Seems I have no trouble taking in - worship, prayer, fellowship at church, reading my Bible, hearing the Word preached. But when or even how do I give back. Joyce made an analogy that it is like breathing. If we only take in breathe and never breath out what would happen. I think you can figure that one out. But doesn't it really apply to everything in our lives. From giving our time to giving our tithe we need to return to the storehouse (church) were we are being feed. It's not just enough to show up on Sunday morning week after week but not a midweek time for prayer or Saturday to do something for the community. And there in lies my problem. I work all week and selfishly want my Saturday's to clean the house, do the laundry, sew, knit, blog..... and the list can go on and on. So what am I to do? Well for one thing I need to die to self, because all those Saturday "chores" will be there later and so will all the things I want to do for me.The Benson Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07153225593636878838noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8189387959251235667.post-81621328278036396812013-08-14T09:36:00.002-07:002013-08-14T11:55:19.431-07:00Joyce Meyer part 1August 9th I had the privilege of going to Hershey Pennsylvania to hear Joyce Meyer speak. I had never really followed her but two of my best friends from church love listening to her so I went with an expectant heart. I wasn't disappointed either.<br />
<br />
Joyce's husband Dave has a real passion for the history and heritage of America. I was nice as well as encouraging to be reminded of what is happening here. How our freedoms are slipping away and we are allowing it by not saying or doing anything. As with anything satan does, it happens subtly that unless we are watching for it we don't even know it has happened and then we wondered how is it that God can't be mentioned in school if we are talking about the God of Isaac, Abraham and Jacob.<br />
Now longer are children taught what is behind the writing of our Constitution let alone even taught what the Constitution says. Then we send our teens off to college where they will grasp at anything that sounds good whether it is Godly or Constitutional or even just morally right. Whether we accept it or not our Constitution is crumbling. Our Constitution was God given and has been upheld since it's beginning.<br />
<br />
Something that Doug and I often debate about is - where was the turning point in American History.<br />
I have always held to what happened in the 30's with the New Deal introduced by Roosevelt. Yes, it was needed at the time BUT is was never to be continued. However, how do you take away something the people like when it is no longer necessary. The church stopped it's role of helping and started to let the government because the "church". Now people could go to the government for the help the church once provided. <br />
<br />
What sealed the "deal" was this concept of separation of church and state. Because the people no longer knew what the law truly said and where this concept came from, they sat back and allowed it to happened. Even if we knew that there was no basis for this separation, we refused to believe anything bad would come out of it, so we chose to do nothing. <br />
<br />

It had its challenges - mostly in my attitude, but I learned years ago about getting that under submission. Sometimes I am successful. Much of what Joyce spoke about were things that I already know BUT have either forgotten or just wanted to ignore. <br />
<br />
One of the first verses that spoke to me in my early years of being a believer back in the 70's was God hasn't given me a spirit of fear....... Yes, even then I knew that fear was holding me back from being all that God wanted for me. Over the years I have struggled with various fears and have conquered some but not others. <br />
<br />
<span style="color: #737373; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;">Dale Carnegie said, “You can conquer almost any fear if you will only make up your mind to do so. For remember, fear doesn’t exist anywhere except in the mind.”</span><br />
<span style="color: #737373; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #737373; font-family: Arial; font-size: 12px; text-align: left;"><br /></span>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #737373; font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;"><b>My faith and battle against fear was put to the test once more tonight as it was nearing 9 pm and I needed to find a place to stay for the night. One that was under $50.00 total and safe for Kate, Tyler and myself. Part of me is saying - just drive through to Louisville, then you won't need to confront any weird people in the lobby. Part of me was saying stay at the $90.00 because you deserve it and part of me was starting to worry about finding this place in the dark anyway. </b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<span style="color: #737373; font-family: Arial; font-size: x-small;"><b><br /></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b style="color: #737373; font-family: Arial; font-size: small;"><br /></b></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">

God - you know are needs and where we need to be. With Kate's directing we made all the right turns and found a Day's Inn that meet our needs. I am in love with my computer, freezer and crock pot. <br />
WHY? Because I finally figured it out.<br />
Computer - learning about freezing meals before putting them in the crock pot.<br />
Freezing - putting it all together on a Saturday<br />
CrockPot - always ready for another meal<br />
<br />
I was dubious at first because the thought of putting canned black beans, onions, peppers etc in to a ziploc bag and freezing it for later to put in the crock pot just sounded - like a failure to happen. <br />
<br />
But we were pleasantly surprise last week when we had a Bean and Sausage Stew --- excellent.<br />
<br />
I have the wonderful ladies at pinterest to thank for encouraging me.<br />

Instructions</h3>
<div class="instructions" itemprop="recipeInstructions" style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 12px; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-align: left;">
<div style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<ol style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">
<li style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">To prepare for the freezer: Combine curry paste, garlic, salt, red pepper flakes and water in a large bowl; stir until combined. Add chicken, onions, bell peppers and carrots; toss to coat with curry mixture. Divide between two large freezer bags. Label bags and tape together, attaching a copy of this recipe. Place in freezer. Put a sticky note on coconut milk and rice.</li>
<li style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">To cook: Remove bags from freezer and let thaw about 30 minutes. Empty bags into a 6-quart slow cooker; cover and cook on LOW 8 hours. Add coconut milk 30 minutes before serving.</li>
<li style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;">Cook rice according to package directions. Spoon rice into bowls and top with soup. Sprinkle cilantro and cashews on top, if using. Makes 3 quarts.</li>

Even the Bible tells us not to forget those who went before us. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This Memorial Day we remember particularly those who gave their lives for our freedoms. </div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In grade school, this was one of the many poems we read. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I still remember it to this day. You may notice a difference between the two - </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
for one says grow and the other blow. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
To fully appreciate who John McCrae was and</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
the original meaning behind this poem check out </div>
